Reflection Paper

Working On Resume:

When I was making my resume for the Computer Aide Temp Coops – College Students program at Con Edison, I started by carefully reading the job description to understand what skills and experiences they were searching for. They wanted someone with technical skills, customer service experience, and the ability to work in a busy environment.

To show what skills and experiences I have that fit the role, I decided to choose my current job at BookoffUSA as an example. It’s a job where I developed a strong work ethic and learned valuable skills in customer service, handling transactions, and solving problems. These experiences matched what the job requirement are, and also shows that I could handle complex tasks and provide excellent service. I also gained technical skills in using software like Word and Excel at this job, and that is another skill that is important for the role at Con Edison.

One challenge I faced was making sure my resume was both detailed and concise. I had to carefully choose which experiences and skills to include, avoiding repetition while still giving a clear picture of my abilities. To overcome this, I prioritized the most relevant experiences and used bullet points to clearly list my achievements and responsibilities. I also made sure to include specific numbers, like the number of attendees I managed during my volunteer work at Japan Fest and Anime NYC.

Working On Cover Letter:

Writing my cover letter involved a similar process of matching my experiences with the job requirements. I started by introducing myself and expressing my excitement for the role at Con Edison. I then highlighted my relevant experiences, especially my work at BookoffUSA and my volunteer work at Japan Fest and Anime NYC. I made sure to use keywords from the job description, like “technical skills,” “customer service,” and “problem-solving,” to show that I was a good fit for the position.

Comparing my cover letter with the AI-generated version gave me valuable insights into effective communication. The AI-generated cover letter was well-organized and concise, which helped me understand the importance of being clear and brief. It also showed me the need to use specific examples and numbers to make a stronger impact. By putting these elements into my own cover letter, I was able to create a more compelling story that effectively conveyed my qualifications and enthusiasm for the role.

Overall, the process of tailoring my resume and cover letter to the job ad was a valuable learning experience. It taught me the importance of matching my experiences with the job requirements, using specific examples, and including numbers to show my achievements. Comparing my cover letter with the AI-generated version further improved my understanding of effective communication, helping me create a more polished and persuasive application.

Other Notes:

Working with AI on this Assignment and the previous one showed me how useful and interesting AI can be. There is a lot that it can do for us, and with every year passing by, it will get better and better.
